Irish defeat Royals 68-58

by Ryan Finke

The Irish boys traveled to Royalton on Feb. 27 and once again came home with a victory, defeating the Royals 68-58.

Maple Lake started out the game with speed and intensity. Taking it to their opponent early, the Mighty Irish pounced on the Royals early in the first half and took a 24-9 lead after the first quarter. But the Royals refused to be embarrassed on their home court and came out in the second with a vengeance. By the time the second quarter was over the Irish only led 32-31.

After halftime, the good guys began to play some basketball and from then on they never allowed the Royals to get back into the game. Outscoring Royalton in the second half 36-27, Maple Lake walked away with another well-fought victory.

The Irish played another sound game of basketball by simply outrunning and out-hustling the big men of Royalton. They shot superbly from the floor, shooting 20-29 inside the arc and 7-14 from downtown. Leaders for the big men were Tom Paumen and Chris Anonen, each grabbing six boards. Lead scorer for the Irish was junior Keith Landreville, who ended up with 19.
