Season-ending win sets Irish volleyball up for playoffs at Howard Lake

In three games the Irish volleyball team lost to Brooten-Belgrade-Elrosa on Oct. 15.      Trouble stopping the serve led to losses of 0-15, 4-15 and 10-15. According to coach Marty Kiebel, “BBE has a very good team as they won a share of the conference title this year. We struggled passing their serve.”

The attack leaders for the Irish were senior Mandy Wurm, going 15 for 20 with 9 kills, and junior Brittani Schroeder, going 10 for 12 with 4 kills.

Irish vs. St. John’s Prep  The final game of the regular season gave the Irish volleyball team a three game win against St. John’s Prep, 15-6, 15-8 and 16-14.

Two seniors played their final home game for the Irish, Mandy Wurm and Brandi Decker. Both had good nights as Wurm led in attacks, going 24 for 29 with 13 kills. Both had perfect nights serving with Decker going 17 of 17 with 3 aces and Wurm going 15 of 15 with 3 aces. The other attack leader was junior Brittani Schroeder, going 13 of 16 with 6 kills.

The rest of the team struggled serving and coach Marty Kiebel said, “Our serving kept St. John’s in the games. As a team we were 78%. We are usually a 90% serving team and this part of the game alone took us out of the rest of our game plan.”      At one point in the third game the Irish were down 12-4, and according to coach Kiebel, “our girls were ‘bending’… and I was out of time-outs. ‘Bending’ was o.k.-as long as we didn’t ‘break.’” The Irish didn’t break and came back to win 16-14, ending their regular season with an overall record of 6-10.

On Oct. 24 the Irish have their first playoff game against Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted away at 7 p.m. Coach Kiebel said, “I hope to see all of MLHS there!!”
