Fire Department receives $11,719 federal grant

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded the Maple Lake Fire Department an $11,719 grant under the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program for Fire Operations and Firefighter Safety.

“I am very pleased with the FEMA decision,” said Congressman Mark Kennedy. “This money will help the Maple Lake Fire Department improve their operations.”

Kennedy said that the grant money could be used for any of the following activities: Training, Wellness and Fitness, Firefighting Equipment, and Personal Protective Equipment.

“This investment by FEMA will help the city of Maple Lake be prepared for emergencies in our communities,” Kennedy said.

Maple Lake Fire Chief Todd Borell said this is only the second year Maple Lake has applied for the FEMA funds. Although last year’s application was not successful, Borell said the available grant dollars tripled this year, providing Maple Lake with a better chance of securing funding. Borell said the grant will be used to purchase gear for fighting grass fires, which will consist of lighter coats, pants, boots and helmets.
