Fourteen vie for Miss Maple Lake crown at St. Pat’s Festival

The coronation of the next Miss Maple Lake will take place during the St. Patrick’s Day Festival on March 15 at 4:30 p.m. in the high school gym. The Maple Lake Chamber of Commerce and the Queen’s Committee wish to take this opportunity to introduce this year’s 14 Miss Maple Lake candidates to their community.

Brandi Decker

Sponsor: Johnson Masonry  Parents: Dale and Vicki Decker  Brandi works at a carwash in Eden Prairie as a cashier, during the fall and winter she is an assistant coach for elementary gymnastics and in the summer, she is an Irish Day Camp counselor.  Brandi’s favorite high school class is English. “I find it a challenge to write interesting, yet informative papers,” she said, while also noting a love for reading. Her hobbies include volleyball, softball, watching sports, reading, hunting, fishing, shopping or spending time with children. “I love kids and I just love being around them,” she said.  After graduation, Brandi plans on attending St. Cloud State University to major in Elementary Education and obtain a coaching certificate.

Jennifer Dombrovski

Sponsor: Dental Resources  Parents: Leo and Christine Dombrovski  Jennifer is employed at Pacific Sunwear at The Outlets of Albertville as a sales associate.  In school, Jennifer enjoys cheerleading and participating in concert and jazz bands. “I have gained more self-esteem by soloing and working with professional musicians,” she said. In her spare time, Jennifer enjoys scrapbooking, listening to music, meeting new people, traveling, and spending time with her friends and family.  After graduation, Jennifer plans to attend St. Cloud Technical College to pursue an AAS degree in sales and management. “My goals upon finishing college are to work in sales and eventually own my own business,” she said.

Kate Fobbe

Sponsor: Fobbe Acoustics  Parents: Steve and Marilyn Fobbe  Kate is not employed. “I don’t have time right now to hold a job and keep up with school and cheerleading,” she said.  Kate’s favorite class is World Geography. “I enjoy the class because I find it interesting learning about different countries and their lifestyles,” she said. Her hobbies include shopping, hanging out with friends, scrapbooking, going camping, running, rollerblading and snowmobiling.  After graduation, Kate will attend St. Cloud Technical College to earn a degree in Dental Assisting.

Miranda Fritz

Sponsor: Madigan’s Pub and Grill  Parents: Dan and Carol Fritz  Miranda works as a cook and waitress at Madigan’s. Her favorite subject in school is journalism. “I like journalism because it gives me a chance to improve on, and receive encouragement for doing something I love: writing.” Her hobbies include watching movies and shopping with friends.  After graduation, Miranda plans to attend St. Cloud State to study English and Secondary Education with a goal of becoming an English teacher.

Ashley Hill

Sponsor: Maple Lake VFW  Parents: Kraig and Shirley Hill  Ashley is not employed during the school year, but has worked at a campground in the St. Cloud area.  At MLHS, Ashley enjoys serving as a student aide in elementary choir. “I love to sing,” she said. “Although I’m not good at it, I like it.” Her hobbies include reading, being with friends and camping.  After graduation, Ashley plans to attend St. Cloud State with a goal of becoming a social worker.

Ashley Horgen

Sponsor: H&H Sport Shop  Parents: Nancy and Dennis Horgen  Ashley is employed at Target as a pharmacy technician. Her favorite area of study at MLHS is WWII. “I am interested in learning about the Holocaust and other things my grandparents lived through,” she said. Other activities include playing on the MLHS basketball team, going to movies, bowling and shopping.  After graduation, Ashley plans to attend St. Bens. “I want to graduate with a degree in nursing,” she said. “Then I plan to go on and become a nurse anesthetist.

Sarah Lange

Sponsor: The Costume Shoppe  Parents: Rick and Nancy Dingwall  Sarah is employed at Roger’s Amoco as a cashier. At MLHS, she enjoys her class on the Holocaust and WWII. “That class interest me a lot,” she said. “And the teacher makes it interesting.” When she is not at work at at basketball games, Sarah enjoys reading and spending time with family and friends.  After graduation, Sarah plans to attend college for the study of surgical technology.

Shandi Pawelk

Sponsor: Laser Technologies  Parents: Dan and Michele Pawelk  Shandi works on Big Elm Dairy, the family farm, doing everything from feeding chickens to loading straw slabs on a skid loader. Her favorite high school class is Medical Careers at Wright Technical Center and her activities include 4-H, cheerleading, band and dance. “The greatest activity to me is dance,” she said. “It gives me a sense of freedoms that I can not feel anywhere else.”  After high school, Shandi plans on attending St. Cloud Technical College with a goal of becoming a license practical nurse and working in a hospital Neo-Natel unit with premature babies. “I would want to help save their lives because I was one of those babies myself,” she said.

Mary Pribyl

Sponsor: Elfmann Plumbing  Parents: Ted and Angie Pribyl  Mary has been working as a Wal-Mart cashier for the past year and a half. In high school, her favorite class is math. “I love the challenge,” she said. “I enjoy working with numbers and formulas in order to find answers to problems.”  Other activities for Mary include serving as a cheerleader for football and wrestling, scrap-booking, reading and traveling with her family.  After graduation, Mary plans on attending Minnesota State University in Mankato.

Chelsie Ritter

Sponsor: Bernatello’s Pizza  Parents: Bill and Mary Jo Wurm  Chelsie has worked in the office at Bernatello’s for the past two years. Her favorite high school activity has been her involvement with Student Council and Irish Mentors, and helped with such projects as designing and constructing the school plaza and tying yellow ribbons around town in “remembrance and hope of a fellow classmate, Joshua Guimond.” In addition, Chelsie enjoys spending time with family and friends. “I also love the outdoors and doing anything crafty or imaginative.”  After high school Chelsie plans to take classes through PCDI for Medical Transcription. “This is a job that deals with a lot of people, and different kinds of people on a daily basis, and that is what I definitely enjoy the most.”

Erika Wold

Sponsor: Maple Lake Lions  Parents: Kip and Marci Wold  Erika is employed at Albion Ridges Golf Course and also babysits throughout the summer for a neighbor. Her favorite high school class is Physics, because she finds working on the projects interesting. “But outside of learning the concepts of Physics, we also meet usually once a week with our second grade buddies,” she said. “They pick out their own book and read to us. It’s a great experience and it’s nice to see the smile of their faces as we walk into the classroom.” Erika is a wrestling cheerleader and also participates in golf, band, Student Council, the Zion Lutheran Youth Group, the Chatham Climbers 4-H Club and participates in dance competition at Star Seekers in Delano.  After graduation, Erika plans to attend either the University of Minnesota-Duluth or St. Cloud State to major in Child Phycology.

Mandy Wurm

Sponsor: Cornerstone Lending, Inc.  Parents: Roger and Charlene Wurm  Mandy is not employed because of her involvement in sports, which includes volleyball, basketball and softball at MLHS. And as the only athlete in school history to collect 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career, her choice of a favorite activity is not surprising. “Basketball,” she said. “I have played it all my life and have learned to love it. And her other favorite pastime is summer basketball, when she went to the AAU nationals. “We took third and it was so awesome to have a winning season,” she said. “I made many friends that I still talk to.”  After graduation, Mandy plans on playing basketball in college and earning a degree in Business Management.

Sara Wurm

Sponsor: Maple Lake American Legion  Parents: Ken and Betty Wurm  Sara has been working at Camp Courage for the past four years as a food service worker and cook and also is employed by Unlimited Travels as a travel agent. Her favorite high school class is choir. “I love to sing and enjoy many types of music,” she said. “I also enjoy competing with other schools and solo and ensemble contests. Sara also enjoys playing and watching Disney movies with her nieces and nephews. “They are a lot of fun and keep my inner child alive,” she said.  After graduation, Sara plans to attend college in Mankato for a degree in Health and Exercise Science.

Katie Zabel

Sponsor: Security State Bank  Parents: Joe and Kim Zabel  Katie is not employed due to her many activities, of which her favorite was cheerleading. “I feel that cheering for a sport is my way of representing the school,” she said, “showing my school spirit and showing the team that I support them.” Other pastimes include sleeping in late, reading, spending time with her family and friends, listening to music and enjoying country life.  After graduation, Katie plans on attending the University of Wisconsin-Stout to pursue a major in Hotel/Restaurant/Tourism Management with minors in Spanish and mathematics. But her main goal is to be a chef someday.
