Two killed in French Lake crash

Wright County Sheriff Gary L. Miller reports that an accident in French Lake Township claimed the lives of two people on Monday morning.

The Sheriff’s Communications Center received a report of a two-vehicle accident involving injuries at 6:45 a.m. on Monday at the intersection of County Roads #37 and #2.     The investigation revealed that a 2001 Ford Crown Victoria driven by Minnie Miley, age 84, from Ocala, Florida, was traveling east-bound on Co. Rd. #37 and failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with a 1994 Dodge van that was traveling south-bound on Co. Rd. #2 driven by Darnel Johnson, age 40, from Annandale.

The vehicles came to rest in the southeast portion of the intersection where the 1994 Dodge van became engulfed in flames. Passing motorists stopped to assist and were able to pull the two occupants from the burning van.     Minnie Miley, the driver of the 2001 Ford Crown Victoria, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, Jacquilyn Grell, age 40, from Kimball, was flown by an air ambulance to North Memorial Hospital where she is still listed in critical condition. The driver of the van, Darnel Johnson, was initially taken to the Buffalo Hospital but later transferred to North Memorial Hospital for further medical treatment. His passenger in the van, Dennis Mercer, age 34 from Annandale, was flown by air ambulance to Hennepin County Medical Center where he died of his injuries a few hours later.      Wright County Sheriff’s Office, Allina Ambulance, Cokato Fire and Rescue, Life Link III, North Air Care and the MN State Patrol all responded to the scene. The accident remains under investigation by the Wright County Sheriff’s Office.
