‘Say Yes to No’ discussions set for Jan. 28

The “Say Yes to No” campaign’s evening for discussions will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, January 28, in the MLHS auditorium.

The Say Yes to No campaign is being conducted in more than 200 schools across the state, including Maple Lake Elementary and High Schools. The schools have joined forces to restore self-discipline in kids and are leading community conversations on raising healthy, successful kids. Minnesota’s Say Yes to No is a campaign that emphasizes self-discipline as the most important life skill that parents and educational leaders can instill in children to help them achieve future success. Using Dr. David Walsh’s latest book, “No: Why Kids – of All Ages – Need to Hear It and Ways Parents Can Say It,” communities have conversations on raising healthy, self-reliant children.

A kick-off event was conducted in Maple Lake in November when participants received books and readers’ discussion guides. On January 28, participants will report to the auditorium for instructions on the location of small discussion groups.

MLHS prepares for Snowcoming 2008

The Maple Lake High School Student Council is making preparations for Snowcoming 2008, which is set for the week of Jan. 28-Feb. 1.

MLHS sports teams will have home contests throughout the week, and dress-up days are as follows: Mon., Get Up & Go; Tues., Salad Dressing Day; Wed., Granny/Grampy; Thurs., Class Color; Fri., Spirit Day. Salad Dressing Day means students can take a type of dressing as their outfit inspiration with examples such as Western, cowboy; Caesar, toga; Thousand Island, pirate; Blue Cheese, Packer’s fan.

A new event will be the Battle of the Grade Competition, which will involve week-long contests such as an academic quiz bowl, free throw contest, royalty relay race and a dance-off.

A pep-fest on Friday, Feb. 1, will feature a variety of activities which could include taping Mr. Hojnacke to the wall and the crowning of Snowcoming kings and queens for each grade from 7th through 12th.
