School board makes preparations for new school year

At the regular meeting on Monday, July 13, the Maple Lake School Board heard construction updates and made preparations for the 2009-2010 school year, including reviewing the facilities-use policy and approving fall coaching assignments.

Superintendent Mark Redemske presented information about upcoming construction projects.

Redemske said he received a request from Marty Kiebel several months ago to replace the high school trophy cases with funds from the construction budget.

Redemske said several state tournament trophies earned by recent and past athletic teams are not on display due to limited space in the existing trophy cases. Kiebel suggested that larger display cases be hung and several of the existing cases be moved near the high school office to provide additional space to display the school’s awards.

According to estimates provided by Kiebel, new trophy cases, including the cost for glass panes, locks and materials for wooden frames, would total about $6,500.

The board approved up to $7,500 to be used for new trophy cases in the high school.

At the June 29 meeting, the board heard information about pond outlet improvements from Job Gutierrez of Wold Architects. The board requested more information about catch basins and increasing pipeline sizes in the design plans.

Gutierrez was not present at Monday’s meeting but the board held a brief phone conversation with Gutierrez to clarify the requirements for the pond outlet.

“The pond outlet has to go from 18 inches to 21 inches to 24 to be able to hold that amount of water. Otherwise the pond will overflow,” he said.

The board previously received quotes to create a pond outlet that increases to 24 inches from 18 inches, as well as two directional-boring pond outlet options, one at 18 inches in diameter and another at 24 inches.

The board approved the bid by Rochon Corp. of Minnesota for a pond outlet increasing in size from 18 to 24 inches at a cost of about $80,000. The board also approved up to $8,500 to be spent on an irrigation system at the new field northeast of the high school and the lowest quote for a new tractor at a cost of $25,000 with a trade-in of two older units. The cost of the new tractor includes a mower, snow blower, sweeper and back blade attachment.

The board requested an update on the construction budget to be presented at the August meeting.

In preparation for the 2009-2010 school year, the board heard suggestions for revisions to the facility-use policy from Nicole Wilke, community education director.
