On a warm Tuesday, May 25, Maple Lake High School was host to the Section 5A Sub-Section 17 track and field meet. In addition to Maple Lake, Annandale, Dassel-Cokato, Meadow Creek Christian, Rockford, Howard-Lake-Waverly-Winsted, and Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity were also in attendance.
In order to advance to the section meet at St. John’s on Wednesday, June 2, athletes must place in the top four in all individual races and in the top two for relay races.
Doing just that, Elly Muller found the perfect time to set a personal record in the shot put. With a throw of nearly 28 feet, Muller’s distance was enough to push her into fourth place by only an inch and half.
“We’ve never had a girl thrower go to sections until this year, and both Jen (Upcraft) and Elly are going on personal records,” Coach Ben Youngs said. “I’m thrilled for her! She peaked at the right time.”
The girls’ 4x100m team also earned a trip to St. John’s after beating out the third-place team from HL-W-W by less than half a second.
“It (sending a relay team to sections) is one of the most important things for the team. It makes their bond tighter and allows not only those four kids to go, but also two alternates as well,” Youngs said.
Competing the day before in Annandale, Danae McGregor placed third in pole vault to advance for the second year in a row.
“Danae made it last year, too, but she set her personal record and a school record in the process,” Youngs said. “Again, it’s nice to see people peaking at the end of the season.”
In addition, Morgan Wolff, Rachel Latour, Nina Simonette, Hannah Haegele and others will also advance.

The boys also had many athletes finish in the top places at Tuesday’s meet to advance themselves.
Patrick Donohue placed first in both the preliminary and final run of the 100m dash. Donohue also took third in the 200m, just in front of Maple Lake’s Kevin Salveson. Donohue is now looking to be successful in the next stage of competition.
“Patrick is in the hunt,” Youngs said. “Hopefully, he will make finals in one or both of his events and go out on top.”
Ben Winkelman, Drew Hanson, Nick Feikema and Wes Paumen combined for a time of nine minutes, 17 seconds in the 4x800m relay to earn first place.
“Traditionally, their time would not have advanced, but that is the thing about sub-sections, one never knows which relays will be stacked and which will be a little weaker,” Youngs said. “They are a solid team, but it was a bit of a surprise. Wes’ gutsy finish sent the team on, and they should have fun on Wednesday.”
Feikema also took fourth in the high jump to advance himself in that event as well. Colby Mavencamp, Kevin Salveson, Mike Mooney and Isaac Hendrickson were a few of the other Maple Lake boys to earn places in the next competition.
