Representing Maple Lake, Graham Brown, Cody Decker, Riley Decker and Sam Marsnik, along with manager Dale Decker, joined players from around the league for the annual All-Star game on July 1 at Irish Stadium.
Following the home run derby, which was won by Monticello’s Eric Schreifels who recorded one home run, introductions and the starting line-ups got underway. Riley Decker started in center field for the North, batting second. In his first at bat Riley connected for a nice hit to the outfield.
Over the course of the game, Cody came in and caught while Brown manned second base. Marsnik also came in and took the mound as the North’s second pitcher of the evening. Although the Laker non-starters played well defensively, they struggled at the plate, going 0-6 collectively. However, Brown was able to make it on base but was thrown out stealing.
Despite a statistically quiet game for the Laker players, the North earned a 4-0 victory over the South.
“It was really fun to just meet everyone,” Brown said, “and it was really fun to play at the stadium with all the fans.”
Lakers vs. Dassel-Cokato
Rounding out the month of June, the Lakers were home on the 30th for a league match-up against the Dassel-Cokato Saints. The Lakers faced the Saints earlier in the year, falling to D-C 1-5.
The Laker bats were going early in the game with the first three batters connecting. However, Riley Decker was the only one to reach, after fighting off the pitcher with two strikes on him. An out in left and the following strike-out ended the first inning, leaving Riley stranded on first.
A three-up, three-down second inning for the Lakers led into the third inning that started with a little help from D-C’s pitcher. Tyler Decker was allowed first before a sacrifice from Luke Fobbe advanced him to second. Unfortunately, this was where he would be left to end the inning.
A big bottom of the fourth put the Lakers on the board, with their only three runs of the game. Bert Marsnik put himself on second with a double right out of the gate. Nate Johnson was walked to reach before Cody Decker came through to advance both runners with a single. A passed ball allowed Marsnik to score and put the Lakers up 1-0. Dusty Decker grounded out to bring up Tyler. With two strikes against him, Tyler connected for a double to score both Johnson and Cody. A hit to the second baseman from Fobbe ended the inning with the score now 3-0 in favor of the Lakers.
Lead-off man Graham Brown singled to start things in the fifth inning and was advanced by Riley’s sacrifice to third. Now in scoring position, Brown stole third but was left stranded after Marsnik went down looking and Chad Raiche popped out in right.
Maple Lake went one, two, three in the sixth and left two men stranded in the following two innings to end the game for a final score of Maple Lake 3, Dassel-Cokato 0.
Jeremy Schmidt pitched nine full innings for the Laker win. Schmidt faced 35 batters, striking out 11 and allowing only four hits for the shut-out.
