Working hard is key to success in Irish volleyball

With fall just around the corner, students try to enjoy their last days of summer by sleeping in and relaxing. However, starting on August 16, the Maple Lake Irish volleyball program was up at the crack of dawn ready to begin the 2010 volleyball season.
Although practice officially started in mid-August, the girls were no strangers to the gym and weight room. With 60 players attending the Irish hitting camp, 55 attending the Paul Moore volleyball camp, and the highest participation in the weight room the volleyball program has ever had, according to Head Coach Marty Kiebel, it’s safe to say “this group of players works very hard year-round.”
The work that was put into the off-season, combined with everyday practices at seven in the morning, and after-school practice starting September 7, will be beneficial to the Irish when they face some of their tougher competition in the conference this season.
“BBE and Pierz are always tough and return some top starters,” said Kiebel. “Overall, our conference is a very good volleyball conference.”
Practices seem to be the key to the team’s success this season as they play each practice to improve and play aggressively. Coach Kiebel stresses the importance of hard work by saying, “We need to keep focused; every practice, every drill, every minute.  If we are aware of what we are putting into every minute of practice, we will maximize our return.”
Feeling optimistic about the season, Kiebel has set attainable goals for the team.
“They will need to fight the temptation for negative self-talk when things don’t go our way, and compete at the highest level during every match whether winning or losing.”
To help the girls stay positive and working to the best of their ability, Kiebel looks to returning starters Brooke Decker, Sami Knott, and Shelby Rachel to help lead the team.
“I will look to them to keep us moving in practices and games,” he said. Kiebel will also be receiving help from assistant coaches Amy Voigt and Leah Davis.
With school starting in less than a week, Kiebel is prepared for the upcoming hustle and bustle of the volleyball season.
“The players have shown a great dedication to improving over the years and I am excited to see how far we can come throughout the season,” he said.
The Irish had their first game in Monticello on Tuesday, August 31, and will be traveling to Watertown-Mayer on the first day of school, September 7, with the game starting at 7 p.m.
