Volleyball goes 1-1 for week

Tuesday, September 28, the Irish volleyball squad loaded the bus with the destination set for Becker, looking for an easy win against the Becker Bulldogs.

The Irish went into the first game confident that they would get the win, but were surprised when the Bulldogs barely let the Irish get a lead. After a battle for the lead, Maple Lake pulled off a win in game one with a score of 25-20. 

After a close first game, the Irish realized that Becker would be a tougher team to defeat than they thought. They stayed focused in game two and pulled off another win 25-16.

Game three began with the Irish taking a lead, but Becker not far behind. Maple Lake made smart plays, keeping the ball off the floor and won 25-20, ending the match.

Irish at BBE

The Irish volleyball team made the long haul to Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa on Thursday, September 30, hoping to continue their winning streak.

The BBE Jaguars were hot right off the bat, while the Irish took a while to warm up. The Jaguars gained a huge lead in game one, leaving the Irish unable to catch up, ending the game 11-25.

After a loss in the first game, the Irish were feeling a little shook up, and knew they needed to get back in the game. BBE earned another early lead, with the Irish trying their best to keep up. The Jaguars took game two with a score of 16-25.

At this point, the Irish were frustrated with themselves and although they were playing well, their hits continued to go into the net. Maple Lake put up a strong fight in the third game, but BBE got the win with a score of 20-25.

“This 2010 season has been a great season of growth,” said Head Coach Marty Kiebel. “With only three players returning with significant playing time, getting used to being a “varsity player” was a big hurdle that many of the girls had to climb. I’m proud of how the players have adjusted, improved, and worked together – but not satisfied.  I know there is still so much more that they can accomplish together.” 

The Irish will play the Holdingford Huskers on Thursday, October 7, at home for the Homecoming game.
