The New Year brought the Irish girls’ basketball team home for the first time in four games, a span of nearly three weeks’ time. On Tuesday, January 4, the Royalton Royals came to town for a non-conference match-up.
The game began with both teams playing tough defense but using different styles, as the Irish settled in man-to-man and the Royals a zone defense. Scoring was held at a minimum as neither team burned up the nets, but the Irish did take a 17-13 lead into halftime.
Without making too many adjustments the Irish took the floor again and continued their strong defensive play.
“We have been searching for our defensive identity for some time now. I think we have found it in our man defense,” said Head Coach Adam Ronnenberg.
The Irish played with the lead for the entire game due in part to their defense, only giving up 11 points in the second half. At the final buzzer the scoreboard read 40-24 in favor of the Irish.
