With the regular season in their rearview mirror, the Lightning wrestlers spent practice preparing to take on Section 6-2A No. 5 seed, Becker, on Tuesday night, Feb. 15, at Annandale High School.
Becker, which had compiled a 10-8 regular season record, had in the most recent rankings landed among the Lean and Mean teams along with A-ML.
The Lightning, with an 18-6 record, hoped to take care of business with the Bulldogs and move on to the section semifinals.
The Becker wrestling team made it clear to the Lightning wrestlers and fans that they were not playing the underdog role and that they came to win the dual.
A pin and a decision in the first two weights put the Bulldogs up 9-0.
At 119 pounds, Jordan Hanan ran up a 13-1 lead in the first period before pinning Becker’s Sam Kirchner in the second period.
“Jordan had built enough of a lead to finish with a technical fall, but he was able to lock down the pin and an extra bonus team point, which we knew we would need to win the dual,” A-ML head coach Jason Bartels said.
Nick Anderson came away with a big win and a team bonus point for the Lightning at 125 pounds when he tacked five points onto his score with time winding down in the last period to get a 12-4 major decision.
