Messy Napkin is a family affair

Following an eight-year hiatus from owning a business, after operating the Maple Lake coffee shop for six years, Chris Blade was looking for a new adventure. Her daughter, Natalie, was itching to get back into the restaurant business after working at Angeno’s Pizza for several years.
“We said the only way we’d do it was if Natalie quit her full-time job to run it,” Chris said.
So, Natalie is managing The Messy Napkin, in Angeno’s former location at 1008 Commercial Drive, Buffalo, while her parents and three sisters also play roles in the business.
The Messy Napkin features build-your-own burgers, pizzas and dessert pizzas.
Burger toppings include items like banana peppers, carmelized onions, pineapple, coleslaw, pulled pork and a fried egg.
Most burger toppings can also go on a flatbread pizza on a 10-inch, deep-fried tortilla.
Both burgers and pizzas can come with one of several sauce and cheese options.
Dessert pizzas are crafted on eight-ounce, deep-fried tortillas and start with marshmallow cream, Nutella, peanut butter or sweet cream cheese. Toppings range from fruit and nuts to cereals and candy. They can be topped off with two choices of caramel, chocolate, sugar glaze and white chocolate.
Since the Maple Lake family opened the business in July, they’ve added appetizers and a salad bar. They are currently adding chicken and pasta to the menu.
