Drama students at Maple Lake High School will be performing the annual one-act play on Jan. 26, under the direction of Mary Beth Barder, in the high school auditorium. This year’s play is titled The Bridge, and the curtain will open at 6 p.m. The Bridge, by Ford Ainsworth, is a modern retelling of the Billy Goats Gruff story. It questions what makes a strong nation and the need for individual thinkers, brave enough to speak up for truth. Three trolls guard a bridge. A herd of starving goats need to cross the bridge to enjoy new pasture because theirs is depleted. The goats join in worship of the trolls in order to gain their favor. However, one goat sees the trolls for what they truly are: superstition and unfounded fear. The trolls agree to the herd’s request only if they agree to sacrifice a member of the herd. The question is whether the submissive herd’s illogical fear of the trolls will win out over the voice of one who stands in defiance, anxious to rid the herd of their foolish superstitions once and for all.
