Northstar Granite Tops: Exceptional quality, value and craftsmanship

Northstar Granite Tops is a custom fabricator and installer of kitchen and bar countertops, bath vanity tops, fireplace surrounds, table tops and more, specializing in granite, marble, engineered quartz, soapstone and other natural stone materials.
Locally based at 601 Sixth Street in Maple Lake and owned by brothers Rock and Steve Bobick, the company has been providing beautiful and lasting stone-surface products to builders, remodelers and the direct consuming public since 2002.
With its origins in Maple Plain, Northstar Granite Tops made the move to Maple Lake in May 2006.
“We were looking for a place where we could purchase land in an industrial park and put up the building with some space outside for the granite,” Steve said. “In Maple Lake, we got a really good feeling about the community and everything that they were willing to let us do here. This place is perfect for us. It’s a nice location for us to go out of, and a nice location for customers to come in.”
Originally, he said, most of the company’s work was in the metro area. But as the business has established roots in this community, so has its client base expanded to include more of the homes and businesses in Wright County.
Accredited, efficient and eco-friendly
A stated mission to exceed customer expectations, in both service and quality, might also play a large part in Northstar’s rising reputation. The Bobick brothers strive to meet that goal by investing time and money in their employees, their plant and its equipment. Employees undergo extensive training to ensure they can properly use state-of-the-art equipment and tools to craft the finest stone countertops available. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has visited the facility and recognized it as a clean, safe environment for employees and customers. Maintaining that focus on excellence confirms the brothers’ confidence that they can provide the best personalized service, efficient turn-around times and superior quality.
An environmentally conscientious enterprise, Northstar’s facility was designed with a closed-loop water recycling system, requiring replacement of only what little water evaporates during the fabrication process. The company also recycles 100 percent of leftover countertop materials, donating larger remnants to local artisans and crushing the remaining scraps to be used in making road beds for the state of Minnesota.
Since 2009 the company has been accredited by the Marble Institute of America (MIA), a distinction that demonstrates Northstar’s expertise in natural stone craftsmanship and a true concern for worker and customer safety, as well as an adherence to business ethics and sound practices. Once accredited, a company is recognized by the MIA as being one of the finest natural stone fabricators in the industry.  Northstar Granite Tops is one of just 57 Accredited Natural Stone Fabricators in the United States, and one of only two in Minnesota.
A dramatic effect
Rock and Steve are closely involved in day-to-day operations of the company, as Rock participates in virtually every templating job while Steve specializes in installation. Both divide their other tasks with daily responsibilities in the Northstar works in the office and show room.
And though they’re likely best known for customized granite creations, Steve said, “We’ll do any natural stone – granite, marble, onyx, soapstone, travertine – any natural stone, anything out there, we can get it.”
Another popular offering is engineered quartz, an amalgam of crushed hard quartz and epoxy that’s strong, attractive and maintenance-free.
And any time, Steve says, is a good time for home improvements.
“Any time someone gets the urge to update their kitchen, we’re happy to be one of the easiest ways to do that,” he said. “Change out a few cupboard and drawer pulls, add granite countertops, and it’s almost like a whole new kitchen. The change is just very dramatic.”
If your cabinets need work, he suggests having them refaced and placing a granite counter on top of that.
“We can swap out the old tops and put in granite with minimal disruption,” he said. “Two weeks after templates are made, we can remove and take away old countertops and put granite tops in – all in one day. And it’ll be a perfect fit when we’re done.”
