Girls, boys hockey teams come up short

On Saturday, Nov. 30, the Monticello-Annandale-Maple Lake Moose faced off at Bernick’s Ice Arena in Sartell against the Sartell Sabres for their first game of the 2013-14 hockey season. The arena was packed with parents, students and alumni from all of the schools involved to cheer on the Moose. The drop of the puck was delayed due to sophomore Nick Johnson of Monticello shattering the glass behind the net with a slap shot during warm-ups.
The MAML Moose came out strong and held the Sabres scoreless until halfway through the first period.  Penalties began to plague the Moose as they had four minor penalties and the Sabres capitalized on those penalties, ending the first period ahead by two goals, one of which was scored on a Sabre power play.
The Moose came out skating hard in the second period. They led with shots on goal, but couldn’t seem to get anything past the Sabres’ goalie. Penalties continued to impact the Moose and, by the end of the second period, they were down 6-0.
