It is time to raise the minimum wage. America is paying a terrible price for cheap T-shirts and hamburgers. If the minimum wage had only kept up with inflation, it would now be over $10 dollars. Here are three quick reasons why you should support an increase in the minimum wage:
First, an increased minimum wage will pull hard-working families out of poverty. People who work hard and play by the rules should be able to feed their family.
Second, increasing the minimum wage will reduce your taxes. Minimum wage workers depend on government subsidy to exist – food stamps, Medicaid, subsidized housing and earned income credit. The American taxpayer is making it possible for the big retailers and fast-food giants to underpay their employees.
Third, an increase in the minimum wage will benefit small business and the local economy. Low-wage workers would not send their extra income to Wall Street, or vacation in Barbados; they spend their money locally on food, auto repair, haircuts and home improvements.
Opponents of raising minimum wage suggest that an increase will be a job-killer. There is no evidence to support that view. Both the Council of Economic Advisers and the Economic Policy Institute estimate that raising the minimum wage would grow the economy, creating additional jobs.
So there you have it; an increase in the minimum wage is good for working families, good for taxpayers, good for the economy and good for the American Soul. It is the right thing to do.
