The 2014 Maple Lake track and field seasons ended on a positive note. To celebrate the season, the track and field banquet was hosted June 2.
Not only did the boys track and field team advance to the True Team State meet, they also sent four individuals to the individual state meet in two events. To summarize the season, the boys won the True Team Section 4A meet, took first at the Subsection 17A meet, placed second at the Central Minnesota Conference meet, second at True Team State, and took fourth at the Section 5A meet.
Also creating a memorable season, the girls track and field team advanced to the True Team State meet. The girls won the True Team Section 4A meet, won the Central Minnesota Conference meet, placed second at the Subsection 17A meet, placed fifth at the Section 5A meet, and took seventh at the True Team State meet.
Numerous Maple Lake High School records were broken throughout the year. Halle Geyen set the new 3200-meter run record (11:57:56). The boys 4×800 relay team – Andrew Schonnesen, Jackson Willard, Scott Jordan, and Ryan Kalinowski – shattered the school record with a time of 8:12.31 and then broke that record with a second-place time of 8:09.33 at state.
Voted on by their teammates, the Hardest Worker Award was handed out to Blair Stewig and Kalinowski for their outstanding efforts. Runner-up was Maddie Gagnon.
Also voted on by their teammates, the Most Improved Award went to Brynn Paumen and Willard for making noticeable improvements throughout the season or over the years.
The CMC Athlete of the Week Award is voted on by the coaches in the conference. Winning this award was Brynn Paumen, Jordan Sifferle, Schonnesen, Cody Bakka and Willard.
Leaving everything on the track, the One Gutsy Race Award was given to Geyen for her 3200-meter race at subsections, and Aaron Reese for running the 300-meter hurdles at sections with stitches in his foot.
Thanking the seniors for a great season, the Senior Award was given to Grant Davis, Bakka, Trevor Borell, Evan Hertwig, Trevor Paumen, Adam Jude, Zach Johnson, Jessie Wohlrabe, Rachel Borgert, Anna Thiele, Stewig, Lori Elsenpeter, Alexa Gorres, Maddie Gagnon, Leslie Reinhard, Hailey Sissel and Rayne Coughlin.
The Most Valuable/Top Five Big Meet Points Award for boys went to Kalinowski in fifth with 208 points. In fourth was Willard with 212 points. Third was Jordan with 254.4 points. In second and winning the MVP Running Award was Bakka with 284 points. With the top total of 305 points, Schonnesen won that award, along with the MVP Field Award.
