The Maple Lake cross country teams finished second and sixth at their season opener Friday, Sept. 2, at Ney Park near Maple Lake.
The girls team tackled the hilly, muddy course to finish runner-up behind Buffalo by only three points at their inaugural event. Eighth grader Augusta DeMarais led the Irish with her fourth place finish in 21:21.8. She was followed by Halle Geyen who finished in 22:27 for 11th place.
“It’s always nice to get to the first race,” coach Ben Youngs said. “It seems like we’re just running as a club until we compete, and then kids get the feel for what we are trying to accomplish. Our home meet is a great way to start. We get a lot of fans, and the uniqueness of having to run through water and mud made it a great experience for the runners.”
