Lakers kick off season with a win

The Maple Lake Lakers started the season with a dramatic, 5-4, come-from-behind win over Cokato to start the North Star League season. Mother Nature provided near-perfect conditions for the opener Sunday, May 7, at Irish stadium. Mitch Wurm started on the mound and kept the Kernels off the scoreboard for the first four of his five innings. That was enough time for McRay Haney to draw a lead-off walk in the third, followed by a sacrifice bunt from acting player-manager Riley Decker and an RBI single by Luke Fobbe to take the lead. The Kernels got on the board with one in the fifth, only to have the Lakers pull ahead in the bottom half of the inning with another walk-sac bunt-single combo from Haney,
