Maple Lake’s boys and girls track teams are both headed to the True Team State Track and Field Championships in Stillwater after coming up big, Tuesday, May 9, at the true team 4A meet in Maple Lake.
The two teams have been perennials at the prestigious event until losses last year ended a four-year winning streak for the Irish.
“It’s nice to go back,” head coach Ben Youngs said.
The boys were in a dogfight the whole way, Tuesday, according to Youngs. “They were trading the lead with Concordia Academy the last half of the meet. After the 3,200, with three events left, it was a 2.5-point difference. Concordia Academy gained on us in pole vault, but we gained more than that in discus, so we had a 9.5 lead going into the 4×4. We took second and they took 11th, so we gained 27 to make it look less close than in really was.”
