The Maple Lake football team traveled to Rockford, Friday, Oct. 13, where they defeated the Rockets, a Mid State Sub 1 foe, 23-10 to better their record to 3-4 on the year.
Friday night’s game was also their “tackle cancer” game and the team honored Maple Lake High School math teacher Michael Hojnacke who has been struggling with the disease. The players’ jerseys sported Hojnacke’s name in pink lettering for the occasion.
The Irish struck first on an Andy Mavencamp field goal to take a 3-0 lead over the Rockets. Rockford tied up the score with a field goal of their own just before the half-time break.
An Irish touchdown in the third quarter gave Maple Lake a 9-3 edge going into the fourth quarter where the team lengthened its lead to 16-3 thanks to a 17-yard touchdown run by Ben Goelz. Mavencamp secured the extra point.
