By Brenda Erdahl, Sports Editor. The Alpine Ski team, of which Maple Lake is a part, had a successful run, Friday, Jan. 26, at Afton Alps, where they placed second after a rough day on the slopes.

Members of the girls team suffered from tumbles and D.Q.s, but managed to finish runner-up out of 20 competing teams despite the difficulties.

“One of the more fun parts of the day was that after what the many athletes felt was kind of a rough day of skiing, our girls team ended up taking second. It was such a wonderful cap to such a fun day, all the more so because it caught all of us by surprise,” coach Eli Dean said.

“I always believed that we had the ability to do so well, but Friday was the first day where the varsity girls proved it by each of them laying down a solid pair of runs.”“I am very proud of the girls for their performance.”

Emma Spike is the sole skier for Maple Lake on the varsity girls team. Next week, on Thursday, Feb. 8, is the sectional race and Spike is right on the cusp of qualifying for the section team, her mom Janice Barthel said.
