Irish upset Eagles

by Brenda Erdahl, Sports Editor:  The Maple Lake boys basketball team is 5-3 after another win last week. On Friday, Jan. 5, the Irish traveled to Eden Valley-Watkins where the team cruised to a 67-47 win over the Eagles in Central Minnesota Conference action. Maple Lake dominated the first half by pressuring the Eagles and never allowing them to find any rhythm on offense. By the break, the Irish were up 47-24. The Irish continued to move and share the ball extremely well on offense, offering up 20 assists on 25 shots made. The Eagles rallied in the second half to score 23 points to the Irish’s 20, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit. “We played very good team basketball in all facets of the game,” Irish Head Coach Tim Staloch said. The Irish outshot the Eagles 44 to 40 percent and made 10 of 29 three-point attempts. At the free-throw line, the Irish were 87 percent successful compared to EV-W’s 45 percent; and Maple Lake out-rebounded a “very good rebounding team,” Staloch said, 34 to 31. The Irish also did an “excellent job” taking care of the ball, committing a season low, seven turnovers compared to the Eagles’ 16. “I was proud of our team play, effort, and intensity,” Staloch said. The Irish are on the road again this week. On Tuesday, Jan. 9, Maple Lake was to travel to Litchfield, and on Thursday, Jan. 11, the team will play at Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa at 7:15 p.m. The boys return home on Tuesday, Jan. 16, when they host Paynesville at 7:15 p.m.
