Gymnasts Defeat Paynesville in Conference Match-up

The Maple Lake gymnastics team came away with a solid victory over Paynesville late last week after being edged by Sauk Rapids-Rice 132.1 to 131.1 two days earlier.

The Irish hosted Sauk Rapids-Rice on Tuesday, Jan. 30, and despite some strong performances by the home-team gymnasts narrowly fell to the non-conference foe.

On Thursday, Feb. 1, the Irish played host yet again, this time to fellow Granite Ridge Conference competitor Paynesville and won 131.275 to 122.85.

The Irish’s efforts put them at 6-5 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

Gracie Elsenpeter led the Irish attack against Sauk Rapids- Rice with first place finishes in the vault (9.275), the bars (8.875), the floor (9.25) and the all-around with a cumulative score of 35.75. She was also third on the beam with an 8.35.

Brooke Mergen finished third on the floor with an 8.875 and was also sixth on the beam (7.7), seventh on the bars (7), ninth on the vault (8.1), and third in the all-around with a score of 31.675.

Olivia LaTour finished third on the bars against Sauk Rapids- Rice with a score of 7.7. She was also eighth on the beam with a seven.

Eva McClelland finished fourth on the vault with an 8.55 and eighth on the floor with an 8.2. Shauni Johnson was fifth on the vault (8.55) and beam (7.95) for the Irish. She was also sixth on the floor with an 8.45, ninth on the bars with a 6.7 ,and fourth in the all-around with a 31.65 score.

Susie Rieber finished fifth on the bars with a 7.275, and Kali Uecker was 10th on the beam for the Irish with a 6.25.
