The Maple Lake girls basketball team kicked off its season this week against Norwood-Young America with a roster full of experienced players.
The Irish lost no seniors to graduation last year and bring almost everyone back, making them one of the most experienced teams in the Central Minnesota Conference, head coach Adam Ronnenberg said.
That will bode well for the team that was scheduled to go on the road to face N-YA Tuesday, Nov. 29, a team that lost in the first round of the state tournament last season and look to be strong again this year.
“We will be much deeper as a team providing us some opportunities to press teams and create offense with our defense,” Ronnenberg said.
Last year the Maple Lake crew finished 8-17 overall and were 4-10 in the conference. They were defeated by top-seeded Annandale in the first round of playoffs.
Junior guard Linsey Rachel and senior forward Morgan Scheiber will lead the team’s starting line-up. Rachel, a first team all-conference selection last season, is a strong athletic guard who gets to the basket well and can defend any position on the floor, Ronnenberg said.
Scheiber, a second team all-conference selection last season, is a “hard working forward with good touch from the perimeter, but can also rebound with the posts.”
