I took a survey of shoppers while I was waiting in the car with our Setter, Vanna, while Janis and Anna were looking for items to buy last week. I don’t often go shopping with them because I’m not one to go from store to store or from shopping center to shopping center to get the best deal, but more power to them! That said, my survey shows an estimated 95% of the shoppers were ladies which isn’t anything new to Target, Macy’s, Walmart or any of the large and small stores. They’ve been targeting lady shoppers for years and years. They have no reason to change. As the old advertising motto says, “Ride the advertising horse till it dies.” More power to them in a year when holiday shopping seems to be at an all-time high. That goes ditto for local stores who compete for the shopping dollar. And as this is the last issue before Christmas we wish all of the Messenger readers the merriest of Christmases. It’s a time for families to get together, give gifts, give thanks and pay homage to the saying, “Peace on earth, good will to men”.

Tuesday night’s full moon (Dec. 13) shined brightly in that night’s clear sky and was followed by two brilliant sun-dogs the next morning as the sun was arcing upward on a bitterly cold, but yet a beautiful morning. We spotted a heathy looking coyote in Dayton last week, not far from the highway. . . The extreme cold that greeted us, minus something or another, might be the coldest for this winter. It didn’t make the snow squeak when I took Vanna out Sunday morning, but I can get along without that phenomenon! The cold weather helped make ice on local lakes over the weekend and I suspect anglers will be out checking its depth this week. There was a fish house on Maple Lake out from the swimming beach Friday and another on Lake Mary the same day.
