Hockey team earns first-ever trip to state

The Monticello-Annandale-Maple Lake boys hockey team has made it to the state tournament for the first time in the history of the program.
On Thursday, March 2, the Moose (No. 1 seed) defeated Chisago Lakes (No. 3 seed) 3-1 in the Section 5A championship for the opportunity.
This is a team that, prior to last year, had never won a section quarter-final game.
“It’s a great feeling. However, I’m not sure it’s completely sunk in yet,” coach Eric Nelson said.
Maple Lake has three players on the team: Devon Lyons, a junior, plays varsity, and Justin Fobbe and Scott Alm play JV for the Moose. MAML, which is now 21-6-1 overall, will take on the No. 2 seeded Delano at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 8, at the Xcel Energy Center.
