Festival takes students around the world

August Schroeder shows off a Day of the Dead mask, which is a popular holiday in Mexico. Schroeder and partner, Harley Hunter, right, researched Mexico for their Festival of Nations project last week. Hunter sports a sombrero and poncho.

Maple Lake students and the public enjoyed a free trip around the world without having to leave the school at the Maple Lake sixth graders' annual Festival of Nations, Friday, May 5. Students spent much of the school year researching their country, collecting information and props. Many of the students dressed in ethnic attire the day of the festival and some even brought ethnic foods for their guests to sample. Above, Audrey Beffel, left, and Erin Uecker "walk like an Egyptian" in front of their display about Egypt. Part of the kids' assignment was to make a statue of someone important to the country. Beffel and Uecker made Cleopatra. (Photos by Brenda Erdahl)
