As local residents gathered at City Hall Tuesday, June 27, to weigh in on the idea of mini roundabouts at two Maple Lake intersections, a message was sent to Wright County officials that such construction would make for welcomed improvements at one of the proposed sites, but not so much for the other.
This project would involve the construction of smaller roundabouts, with surmountable curbing allowing for truck clearance, which Wright County Engineer Virgil Hawkins has said would reduce delays and increase traffic capacity. If the city agrees, one or both could be included in the county’s 2018 or 2019 safety project budget.
The proposal includes two sites, the first being the intersection of County Roads 37 and 8. There would be no cost to the city with this project. The second site, the five-pronged intersection of County Road 8, Division Street, County Highway 57 and Elm Avenue, has been presented to the council with two options: either constructing a five-legged roundabout or making Elm Avenue South a cul-de-sac. The cost to the city would be $50,000-$150,000, depending on which option is chosen. Homeowners would not be assessed for either of these projects.
