Local square dance club swings on

Swing your partner and do-si-do are legendary square dance calls and they are being heard less often in ballrooms, gyms and barns across the nation, but here in Wright County the art of square dancing still thrives.
The activity, which dates back to 15th century Europe was re-popularized in the states in the 1920s because it was thought an excellent form of exercise and a way to acquire genteel manners. It is used today for that same purpose, and because it’s fun.
“I don’t know that I’ve ever not had fun square dancing,” Richard Giebenhain of Maple Lake said.
He and his wife Pat joined the County Line Squares 12 years ago and have been dancing ever since. The club has 99 members to date with folks hailing from Wright, Hennepin, Sherburn and Stearns counties primarily, with a few from Anoka, Meeker, Benton and Carver. Registered as a Maple Lake 501c3 organization, the group holds its classes, workshops and monthly dances at the Monticello schools.
