The Maple Lake Irish football team had a tough first game against a veteran Minnewaska, Thursday, Aug. 31, on the road.
The bigger, faster, stronger Minnewaska crew jumped to an 8-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. The home team tacked on another touchdown and two-point conversion in the second quarter to gain a 16-0 upper-hand on the Irish going into halftime.
Maple Lake held the Lakers scoreless in the third then allowed another run in the fourth and finalquarter.
The Irish battled back with a touchdown run by Zach Cargill. The kick was unsuccessful, leaving the final score 23-6.
“We didn't move the ball very well offensively in the first half and kept our defense on the field too long,” coach Tim Knudsen said after the game.
“We had a nice 96-yard drive in the third quarter. Unfortunately, we couldn't punch it in from the six. We have a lot of work ahead of us,” he said.
The Irish will host Eden Valley-Watkins at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8.
