Melrose used a home-field advantage to outscore Maple Lake 21-13, Friday, Oct. 6.
The Dutchmen struck first with a two-yard touchdown run by R. Nelson. An on-target kick for the extra point gave the home team a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
Nelson struck again in the same quarter, throwing to J. Middendorf for a 50-yard touchdown pass. Nelson again supplied the extra point to make it 14-0 in the Dutchmen’s favor going into the second quarter.
The Irish rallied for a touchdown of their own in the second when Ben Goelz ran the ball 63 yards into the end zone. A two-point conversion run attempt failed to keep the score 14-6 in Melrose’s favor going into the half-time break.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Dutchmen struck with another touchdown pass from Nelson to Middendorf. The extra point gave Melrose a 21-6 lead.
The Irish weren’t through fighting, however, and came back with a Ben Clapp touchdown and field goal by Andy Mavencamp to end the game 21-13.
Up next for the Irish is Rockford at home at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13.
