Joan Patricia Loftis Wilcox passed away peacefully on September 6, 2017, in Bryan, Texas. Joan was born on September 21, 1937, to James Hunter Loftis and Mamie Tuggle Loftis in Atlanta, Georgia, where she was raised. She attended Asbury University in Wilmore, KY, where she met her life mate, James Russell Wilcox. Joan and James were married on December 21, 1958, and had three children; Kent Randall Wilcox, Teresa Gaynelle Wilcox, and Lane Eric Wilcox. Joan spent many years of her life as an elementary school teacher in Maple Lake, St. Michael, and Buffalo, sharing her love of learning with inquiring young minds. When not working, Joan loved sewing, quilting, knitting, and needlepoint.
Joan was a kind and gentle spirit who showed us the meaning of unconditional love. She welcomed all with open arms, was unwavering in her faith, and had a heart of service. She leaves us with many good memories, grandma-isms, and the desire to make the world a better place.
Here to cherish her memories are her sons, Kent and Lane (Tammy Brand), daughter, Teresa (Terrence Barnhardt), grandchildren, Mamie Rose Barnhardt and Eva Marie Barnhardt, sister, Pamela Lane, and two grand-canines, Misha and Kiera. Joan was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brother, James Loftis.
We thank the staff at Hudson Creek for their loving care of Joan and Encompass Hospice staff for their compassion and support. Joan’s ashes, along with those of her husband, will be interred in Wilmore, KY, a place where they began their life together and will rest together. Memorials may be made to Asbury University or the Salvation Army.
