The Maple Lake football team has made it to the final game of the Section 4AA tournament. The only thing that stands between them and a state tournament berth is Minneapolis North, the No. 1 seeded team in the section.
The No. 3 seed Irish earned its first section 4AA win Tuesday, Oct. 24, when it defeated No. 6 seed St. Paul Humboldt. The Irish overpowered the Hawks 55-6 on Maple Lake’s home field.
The Irish took a commanding lead in the first quarter ignited by a Cole Trager interception return and a two-point conversion by Ben Reilley for eight points. Zack Cargill then completed a 16-yard run, and with Andy Mavencamp’s extra point, the Irish were up 15-0. Brock Goelz picked off a Humboldt pass and returned it to the second yard line for an easy touchdown by Cargill. Mavencamp’s extra point was good to make the score 22-0.
