Brewfest is a barrel of fun

Around 175 people attended Maple Lake’s third Brewfest, Saturday, June 17, at Irish Stadium to taste more than 91 different selections of beers, wines and spirits from area vendors. (Photo by Lee Ann Yager)

Maple Lake’s third Brewfest went off without a hitch, Saturday, June 17. Even the rain held off until the last beer was drunk.
Although the skies threatened most of the afternoon, they didn’t open until around 5 p.m., closing time for the event that drew close to 175 people to taste more than 91 different selections of beers, wines and spirits at Irish Stadium.
“It was perfect timing,” said city clerk and Brewfest organizer Lee Ann Yager.
In the Taster’s Choice Award, Fargo Brewing Co. ousted two-time returning champion Spilled Grain of Annandale by winning the most votes. Lupulin Brewing out of Big Lake was second and Spilled Grain came in third. According to Yager, the competition was close, within one-vote close.

Rides of a lifetime

Lynda Zimmerman fulfills a dream of a lifetime by owning and competing with her horses. (Photo by Bob Zimmerman)

Lynda Zimmerman, of Maple Lake, enjoys Competitive Distance riding with her horses and continues to be successful. Paso Finos are not a common breed choice for the sport, but any equine is eligible, so Zimmerman competed in two rides in the fall of 2009 to see if she and her horse had the right stuff. They did, and in their first full season in 2010 earned Rookie of the Year honors in the seven-state Upper Midwest Endurance Competitive Rides Association as well as the Minnesota Distance Riding Association. More recently, her two steeds were the number one and number two Paso Finos in the nation in 2015 and 2016. She is aiming for the three-peat this year, starting the season with a successful ride completion with her gelding and a 5th-place finish with her mare.

Maple Lake Brewfest 2017

The Maple Lake Brewfest will be back for its third year in a row on Saturday, June 17, at Irish Stadium.
Last year the event attracted 25 brewers and a crowd of enthusiastic taste-testers. This year, organizers expect to have at least 30 vendors in attendance who will be offering some of their most sought after beers.
With an initial fee at the door, or a ticket purchased in advance, visitors receive a mug, a score card, a poker chip and a selection of more than 50 craft beers available for sampling.

Red Cross calls for new donors to prevent a summer blood shortage

The American Red Cross urges those who have never given blood before – as well as those who haven’t given recently – to make an appointment to give blood or platelets now and help sustain a sufficient community blood supply this summer.
While the need for blood is constant during the summer months, the Red Cross experiences a drastic decline in new donors. Nationwide, about 32 percent fewer new blood donors, and more than 34 percent fewer in Minnesota, came out to give last summer than during the rest of the year. Additionally, many schools where blood drives are held – and where new donors give – are not in session, and current donors often delay giving due to summer vacation plans.

Community group raises $21K for camp with Steak Fry

The Camp Friendship Dining Hall was packed with guests, Friday, May 5, during the camp's annual Steak Fry. The fundraiser raised $21,000 for camper scholarships. (Photo Submitted)

On Friday, May 5, a local group of volunteers organized the annual Steak Fry at Camp Friendship and raised $21,000 in support of camper scholarships. This amount breaks the record they set last year of $19,000. The event drew over 430 attendees and included steaks cooked by the Clearwater Lions, raffles and a silent auction. A troop of Boy Scouts from Annandale bussed the tables and cleared trash during the event.
