Lakers win three of four in busy week


Irish pitcher Derek Rachel hurls the ball toward a Montrose/Waverly batter, Sunday, June 18, at Laker Stadium. Rachel got the win with five innings pitched and had a great day at the plate with three runs, three hits and four RBIs.

The Maple Lake Lakers made the best of a busy week, winning three of four against league rivals to put themselves in sixth in the North Star League. The Lakers put up 35 runs last week thanks in part to McRae Haney, Graham Brown, Riley Decker, and Derek Rachel all hitting over .400. Maple Lake will look to continue their success as they approach the halfway point in the regular season.

Lakers down Buffalo 19-7 at home

The Maple Lake Lakers celebrated the career of longtime player and coach Chad Raiche on Sunday afternoon when he was inducted into the North Star League Hall of Fame after 19 seasons of play. Raiche’s combination of power at the plate, defensive capabilities, and pitching contributed to hundreds of Lakers’ victories and earned him numerous personal accolades over his storied career. Beyond that, his love for the game helped build Maple Lake baseball.

Irish advance to section championship game

The Maple Lake High School baseball team will play in the Section 5AA Championship game this week for a berth in the State Baseball Tournament.
The Irish defeated Watertown-Mayer 6-0; Holy Family 6-2; and Providence Academy 7-3 for the right.
The championship game will be played at Irish Stadium at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, June 8.
Hunter Malachek threw a shutout on Maple Lake’s way to defeating the Royals, Tuesday, May 30, in the first round of the section tournament. He allowed just one hit.
The Irish took an early one-run lead in the first inning. The ball players scored another run in the bottom of the fourth, then tacked on four more in the fifth, thanks to doubles by Malachek and Ben Clapp and a home run by Ben Reilley.

Track and field advances 25 to sections

The Maple Lake girls and boys track teams finished first and second, respectively, at the sub-section 17A meet last week and advanced 25 athletes and 10 alternates to the Section 5A meet at St. John’s this week for a shot at state.
Catie Fobbe set the school and stadium record in the discus, Tuesday, May 23, at Maple Lake High School, throwing it 124 feet and 1 inch for first place. The top four individuals and top two relays advance to sections, along with anyone who meets the section standard. Fobbe was also named Central Minnesota Athlete of the Week, due in part to her performance.
Other notable performances came from the girls 4x800-meter relay team of Ava Mergen, Sophie Pribyl, Gus Demarais, and Bionca Peterson with their first-place performance.

Irish open tournament with shut-outs

The Irish softball team opened the Section 5AA tournament last week with double-digit shut-outs over Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted and Eden Valley-Watkins.
On Tuesday, May 30, Maple Lake was to meet East Subsection No. 2 seed Rockford in Rockford for the chance to play in the championship game and a shot at the state tournament. The final game will be held in Rockford on Thursday, June 1, starting at 4:30 p.m.
After a first-round bye, Maple Lake kicked off the tournament on Tuesday, May 23, with the home-field advantage over the Lakers.
Linsey Rachel’s double in the first inning off a wild pitch set the tone for the game as the Irish cruised to a 10-0 victory.

Boys clinch CMC title

The Maple Lake High School baseball team won its second consecutive Central Minnesota Conference title, Tuesday, May 23, at home when it defeated Eden Valley-Watkins 7-0.
The Irish finished with a 13-1 CMC record and go into playoffs this week boasting an 18-2 overall record and as the No. 1 seed.
The Irish were scheduled to kick off the tournament against Watertown-Mayer on Tuesday, May 30, after a first-round bye. The Royals, seeded No. 9, ousted No. 8 seed Litchfield last week for the opportunity. The tournament will be held at Irish Stadium.
The Irish took an early lead against the Eagles in the team’s final regular season game of the year when Brock Goelz hit a single to drive in a run.

Maple Lake golfers are 4th in CMC

The Irish boys golf team finished fourth in Central Minnesota Conference standings after three final regular season meets last week, and two players earned top-ten honors.
Devon Lyons placed ninth in the CMC with a season average of 44.17, and Joseph Stokman placed 10th with a season average of 44.67.
On Thursday, May 18, Maple Lake traveled to ShadowBrooke in Lester Prairie where the team finished sixth led by Stokman with 45 strokes.

Irish do well at two golf meets

The Irish girls golfers finished up their regular season on Friday, May 19, with two Central Minnesota Conference Meets.
The Irish traveled to Osakis in the morning and played another round at Prairie View Golf Course in Brooten in the afternoon.
Katie Webb shot a season low 47 to lead the Irish at Osakis; Ashlee Martie wasn't far behind with a 51; and Andrea Peterson posted a 57.
Peterson shot the Irish's low score of 50 at Brooten; Webb came away with a 51; and Martie shot a 59.

Malachek selected for All-Star team

Maple Lake senior Hunter Malachek was selected to participate in the 43rd Annual Play Ball! Minnesota High School All-Star Baseball Series from Thursday, June 22, through Saturday, June 24, in Chaska, at the Chaska Athletic Park.
The tournament is presented by the Minnesota State High School Baseball Coaches Association, Play Ball! MN, B.I.G Athletics, and Cambria.

Irish ball players win No.1 seed

The Maple Lake baseball team ended its regular season with another win, giving them a 17-2 record and the No. 1 seed going into playoffs next week.
The Irish bettered its record with a 5-1 win over Providence Academy on Tuesday, May 16, on the road.
Maple Lake pushed one runner across the plate in the first and third innings, but it wasn't until the fifth inning that the Irish pulled away and secured the win. Ben Clapp and Nate Hogan each hit singles for three runs that inning. Providence Academy scored one run in the bottom of the fourth. Hunter Malachek earned the win on the mound. He threw seven innings, gave up one run, five hits and struck out eight. The Irish had 10 hits for the game. Ben and Brock Goelz and Hogan each had two hits to lead the Irish. As a team, Maple Lake didn't commit a single error in the
field.
