Carol Wurm will lead 30th St. Patrick’s Day Parade

In Security State Bank’s 100th year of service to the Maple Lake community, it is fitting that a retired bank staff member has been selected by the Maple Lake Chamber of Commerce to serve as the Grand Marshal of the 2007 St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 17.

Carol Eichten Wurm, a 1961 graduate of Maple Lake High School, retired in June after working for 45 years at the local bank.

But despite her long record of service to Security State Bank and the Maple Lake community, her selection as the recipient of Maple Lake’s highest honor was an emotional surprise.

“I started crying right away,” Wurm laughed as she recalled hearing the news that she would be the Grand Marshal of the 30th Grande Day Parade. “It was just pretty neat to be recognized for contributions to the bank and the community.

“It will just be a lot of fun.”

There are few who have a resume like Carol Wurm, who began work at the bank as a high school student hired during her senior year to file checks and ending her career as a vice president of operations. Her career grew along with the growth of the bank and the Maple Lake community. In 1972 she was named as assistant cashier, promoted to cashier in 1976, vice president in 1983, executive vice president in 1991 and vice president of operations in 2000.

She has served the Wright County Banker’s Association as secretary-treasurer in 1991, vice president in 1992 and president in 1993. She has also worn many hats at Security State Bank which include security officer, compliance officer, Bank Secrecy Act officer, internal auditor, human resources officer, secretary to the Board of Directors, the bank’s scholarship committee and director of the Wright Time Club.

Along with her long list of responsibilities at the bank, Carol and her husband, Lawrence, raised four children. Son, Greg, his wife, Pam, and their children, Nick and Lauren, live in Annandale; son, Jerry, his wife, Tracey, and their children, Brittany and Chelsey, live in Maple Lake; daughter, Julie, and her husband, Mike, live in Monticello; and son, Glen, and his wife, Rosie, live in Woodbury with children Isabella, Francesca, Solomon and Elijah.

Wurm also found time to devote to a large number of community activities and volunteer efforts. She has served on the St. Timothy’s Church Finance Board, as St. Timothy’s CCW secretary and treasurer, spent three years on the Maple Lake Planning and Zoning Commission, 15 years as the Maple Lake Chamber of Commerce treasurer, five years on the St. Patrick’s Day Festival Queen’s Committee, was co-chair of the 1990 Maple Lake Centennial All-School Reunion and began her current tenure as secretary of the Maple Lake Housing Development Corporation in 1988. In recognition for her contributions to Maple Lake, Wurm was honored with the Minneapolis Aquatennial Commodore’s Award in 1991.
