Feb. 4th event to feature new attractions

As of press time, the Maple Lake Ice Fishing Derby is moving forward despite warm weather that could affect the safety of the ice.
As of last week, there was 16 ½ inches of ice on the lake, which is good news, chairman Greg Thomes said. Last year at this time there was only 12 to 13 inches and continued warm weather convinced organizers to cancel. The ideal amount of ice for a contest of this size is 18 to 24 inches.
“So far this year we still have very good ice,” Thomes said late last week, but by Tuesday, Jan. 24, ice conditions had deteriorated to the point that organizers are worried.
“Now the ice is not good. We don’t want to jeopardize people,” Thomes said.
The Maple Lake Property Owners Association was to meet Wednesday, Jan. 25, to make its final decision. On the table is whether to go ahead with the Feb. 4, date, postpone the derby until Saturday, Feb. 11, or cancel it all together, Thomes said.
