The Annandale Co-op alpine ski team finished a tough race at Afton Alps in Hastings, Friday, Jan 27.
Both boys and girls teams broke into two squads among the 13 or so teams at the meet.
The co-op’s girls squad one finished 10th overall. Emma Spike, a junior at Maple Lake, finished 71 after a tough run. After disqualifying on the red, she regrouped to finish with a 48.55 on the blue.
The girls squad two fared better, placing sixth overall.
The boys squad one finished 11th and squad two didn’t place.
“The Afton race for our team was a tough race.  We had several that had tough runs, but one of our teammates (Riley Matthiesen of Kimball) was recognized for his sportsmanship. That is quite an accomplishment,” Annandale Co-op Head Coach Lori Rice said.
“He had a tough first run and was a great sport about it, and then improved on his second run.  He did a nice job handling the situation. The field of skiers was large and this was a special award,” Rice said.
The skiers were to take to the slopes again on Tuesday, Jan. 31, in Mankato. On Thursday, Feb. 2, they host a tournament at 5:30 p.m. at Powder Ridge in Kimball, and on Monday, Feb. 6, the Annandale Co-op travels to Brainerd for a 3:30 p.m. event
