Stokman named to region team

Saint John’s University sophomore guard David Stokman, a Maple Lake High School graduate, was named to the D3hoops.com All-West Region third team on Monday, March 13.
The D3hoops.com All-West Region teams included a total of 16 student-athletes, due to a tie for the 15th and final spot. Stokman was joined by fellow MIAC representatives, Grant Shaeffer, a guard from St. Thomas (first team), and Collin Olmscheid, a forward from Augsburg (third team).
A 2016-17 All-MIAC first-team selection, Stokman is currently second in NCAA Division III (through games of March 11) in three-point percentage (.503, 81-for-161) and 10th in free-throw percentage (.885, 123-for-139; minimum 125 attempts). In addition to his stats from behind the arc and the free-throw line, Stokman started all 28 games and led SJU in scoring (18.1 points per game), while finishing second in rebounding (4.0 rebounds per game), assists (98) and steals (20). He led the MIAC in shooting percentage among guards (.534), three-pointers (62), free-throw percentage (.900) and three-point percentage (.530), and tied for third in both scoring (17.5 points per game) and assists (74) in conference play. 
He registered 11 20-point games, including five over 30 points, and his 81 three-pointers were the second-most by a Johnnie in a single season, one behind Kevin Buth’s record of 82 set in 2002-03. His season-high of 37 points scored Feb. 13, at Macalester were the most by a Johnnie in a single game since Jan. 28, 1989.
Stokman averaged 26 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists, while shooting 60.5 percent (26-for-43) from the field, in three post-season games this season. He currently boasts SJU’s best career three-point percentage (.485, 115-for-237) and is second from the free-throw line (.870, 167-for-192).
An economics and philosophy double-major with a 4.0 GPA, Stokman was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American and a MIAC Elite 22 Award honoree in late February.
SJU finished fourth in the MIAC with a 13-7 record to earn its 24th trip to the conference playoffs and advanced to the MIAC Playoff Championship game for the 12th time in the program’s history and first since 2006-07. The Johnnies recorded 19 wins (19-9 overall) for the second consecutive season.
