As part of the State Legislature’s 2017 session, numerous add-ons to the omnibus bills were added to the larger spending bills, some of which were very specific to a single-issue matter. One of them, brought by State Rep. Steve Drazkowski of Wabasha County, resulted in the Wright County Board of Commissioners officially bringing to an end the highly successful DriveWright program, which offered a diversion program for minor traffic offenses in the county, at its July 11 board meeting.
Drazkowski placed a provision in the omnibus tax bill because of a personal dispute he had with a driver diversion program in Wabasha County which used the proceeds to purchase sheriff’s department vehicles, creating some animosity among residents who were forced into the program. The provision, which became law when the tax bill was passed, made it virtually impossible to continue the DriveWright program.
