The Irish cross country teams kicked off the season with a 12-team invitational at Ney Park near Maple Lake.
The highlight of the morning was the girls team win and victory over the No. 5 ranked team in state, Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted.
The Irish slipped by Rockford (another Section 5A opponent) in second 65 to 66 and HL-W-W was close on their heels with 69 points.
“The fact that three teams were within four points made it exciting, and shows how important every place is in a race,” Irish Head Coach Ben Youngs said.
