Regina Clare Matheny was born May 13, 1932, in Topeka, Kansas, to John and Catherine (Duman) Stadler, the 10th of 11 children. After obtaining her nursing degree in 1955 from St. Mary’s Nursing College in Xavier, KS, she moved to Minnesota and worked as an RN at St. Mary’s Hospital in Minneapolis. She married Jack Matheny on June 22, 1957. They moved their growing family to Annandale in 1968.
Gina modeled her life after our Holy Mother. Her family was blessed by her rich faith, unwavering love and grace. Jack and Gina sat in the quiet before dawn and met each day together. The strength and love of their union was the foundation of their family and extended into the community.
Gina’s gift was a ministry of care and healing. She recognized the Divine Presence in every life. She practiced her ministry as an RN at the Annandale Care Center where she worked until her retirement in 1999. Additionally, she served as a parish nurse, a religious education teacher, was a member of the Northwest Deanery, CCW, MCCL Outreach, and numerous other organizations. However, the crown of her life was her family. Strong bonds of family, deep faith in God, and joy in serving those in need, is her legacy, one that will be celebrated and shared for generations to come.
Gina is survived by her children, Michael (Margie) of Byron, CA, Mary (Randy) Lefebvre of Annandale, Jean (Craig) Stolpestad of Monticello, Renee (Mike) Miller of Watkins, Germaine (Brian) Peterson of Forest Lake, Jack of Mesa, AZ, Martin (Nancy) of St. Croix Falls, WI, and Paul (Hiroko) of Mumford, TN; 22 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Bill Knoebber of Topeka, KA; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Zappia of Roseville, and Nancy Abrahamson of Rush City; and numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Jack, three brothers, and seven sisters.
