Gymnasts soar to win over Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted

Five Irish gymnasts claimed first-place finishes on their way to a 131.575 to 120.950 team win over Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted, Friday, Dec. 15, in Howard Lake. Gracie Elsenpeter led the charge with firsts in the vault (9.325), parallel bars (8.850), floor exercise and all-around (35.125). Olivia Latour claimed the top spot on the balance beam with a score of 8.100. “Great improvements from both JV and varsity,” coach Kaitlyn Helmbrect said. “Varsity floor was our best event of the night with five great performances.” Elsenpeter’s 9.175 was the top performance on floor, Friday, and her teammates claimed the next three spots. Shauni Johnson finished second with a score of 8.550; Brooke Mergen was third with an 8.400; and Latour was fourth with an 8.375. Abby Gagnon finished Irish scoring with a 7.700 for eighth place. Latour also claimed second on the vault with an 8.775, was eighth on the parallel bars with a 6.750, and was second in the all-around with a score of 32.000. Johnson finished fourth on the vault with an 8.650, was fifth on the parallel bars with a 7.250, seventh on the beam with a 7.400, and was third in the all-around with a 31.850. Eva McClelland was fifth on the vault with an 8.550; Gagnon was ninth on the vault with an 8.350, fourth on the beam with a 7.675, and seventh in the all-around with a 23.725. Mergen tied for third on the parallel bars with a 7.325. She was also ninth in the all-around with a 15.725. Susie Rieber was fourth on the parallel bars with a 7.300 and fifth on the beam with a 7.500. Up next for the Irish gymnasts is a home meet with Litchfield on Thursday, Dec. 21, at 6 p.m.
