Irish Continue Win Streak

By Brenda Erdahl, Sports Editor. The Maple Lake boys basketball team added another three wins to their season last week, making them 12-3 overall. One of those wins was over Central Minnesota Conference opponent Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted. The boys currently hold the top spot in the conference standings with a 6-0 record.

The Irish kicked off the week on Tuesday, Jan. 23, at Mora. Three different times the Irish built double digit leads only to have Mora close the gap to at little as three. By the half, the Irish were up 32-19. Mora outscored Maple Lake 36-30 in the second half, but the Irish were able to hold on for a 62-55 win.

“We did a great job with offensive rebounding,” coach Tim Staloch said. The Irish had 16 offensive rebounds to Mora’s eight. Overall, they out rebounded their opponent 40-24. The Irish were also 38 percent from the three-point line and made six of nine free throws. They shot 39 percent from the field.

Mitch Hoistad led scoring with 18 points, five rebounds, and two assists. Andy Mavencamp supplied 15 points for the Irish along with three rebounds and one assist, and Joseph Stokman had 13 points, four assists, and four rebounds.
