REGULAR SCHOOL BOARD MEETING MONDAY, JANUARY 8, 2018 INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT #881 MAPLE LAKE, MN MINUTES

Board Members Present: Joe Paumen, Shelley McAlpine, Shelly Liljequist, Bill Neumann, Chris Paumen, Joe Mavencamp, and Richard Thomas Board Members Absent: None Others Present: Mark Redemske, David Hansen (arrived at 7:50 p.m.), Andy Sawatzke, Maureen Donohue, Tanya Malwitz, Eric Meyer, and Katie Friedman 1. Meeting called to order at 7:01 p.m. 2. Pledge of Allegiance 3. Election of a School Board Chair – Thomas nominated Joe Paumen. M/S Thomas/McAlpine Motion carries 7-0 4. “District #881 is Proud of” – Our Paraprofessionals-January 22- 26 is Para Recognition week. 5. Recognition of visitors- Tiffany Grube 6. M/S Thomas/McAlpine Approve the Agenda for the regular school board meeting held on Monday, January 8, 2018, with the addition of items 10C, 10D, 10E, 10F, 10G and 10H. Motion carries 7-0 7. M/S McAlpine/Mavencamp Approve the Consent Agenda for the regular school board meeting held on Monday, January 8, 2018. Motion carries 7-0 8. Open Forum-None 9. Unfinished Business A. M/S McAlpine/C. Paumen Motion to approve the licensed staff seniority list for 2017-2018. Motion carries 7-0 B. December 21, 2017 enrollment was 837.2 students. C. M/S McAlpine/Thomas Motion to approve a new master agreement with the Maple Lake Federation of Teachers for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years. Motion carries 7-0 10. New Business A. Motion to approve organizational items effective January 1 through December 31, 2018. M/S Thomas/McAlpine Motion to approve school board officers in addition to Joe Paumen-Chair, Shelly Liljequist-Vice-Chair, Shelley McAlpine-Clerk, and Joe Mavencamp- Treasurer. Motion carries 7-0 M/S Paumen/McAlpine Motion to approve school board appointments. Motion carries 7-0 M/S McAlpine/C. Paumen Motion to approve designations with no changes. Review draft of 2018-2019 school calendar. The draft will be sent to the building leadership teams for input. C. M/S Thomas/Liljequist Motion to approve a donation from MEADA for $500. Motion carries 7- 0 D. M/S J. Paumen/Thomas Motion to approve the following coaching changes: Tim Tungseth replaces Marty Kiebel as JH girls basketball coach; Beth Olson as a full-time speech coach, and Jody Markgraf as half-time speech coach. Motion carries 7-0 E. M/S Thomas/McAlpine Motion to accept $1,956 donation to Club #881 from Mike Hojnacke for T-shirt sales proceeds. Motion carries 7-0 F. M/S Neumann/Liljequist Motion to accept a $3,050 donation from Mike Hojnacke’s family memorial. Motion carries 7-0 G. M/S Mavencamp/McAlpine Resolution ratifying the award of the sale, determining the form and details, authorizing the execution, delivery, and registration, and providing for the payment of general obligation bonds, series 2018A. Roll call vote: All yes. Motion carries 7-0 H. M/S McAlpine/Thomas Resolution ratifying the award of the sale, determining the form and details, authorizing the execution, delivery, and registration, and providing for the payment of taxable general obligation bonds, series 2018B.Roll call vote: All yes. Motion carries 7-0 11. Representative Reports A. Food Service Committee – Mavencamp reported the last meeting discussed what meals the students liked and didn’t like. Ryan Highberg reported that sales were up. B. Meeker and Wright Special Education Cooperative – Thomas reported that they discussed negotiations and the budget. C. Wright Technical Center – McAlpine reported about tours for schools and the audit. D. Elementary School – Sawatzke said that NWEA testing is now through Friday. Late Start: Teachers will participate in PLCs and paras will be learning about Executive Functioning, Irish Pride Celebration, and Irish Connections. The 6th Grade Ski Trip is January 19. The District Spelling Bee is January 25 at 1:15 p.m. in HS auditorium. Conferences begin February 1, Battle of the Books is February 1-2 and PTA Bingo and Pizza Night is on February 8. E. High School – Meyer reported the end of Semester is January 19. Students will receive their next semester schedules on January 9. Testing prep is underway and testing schedules will be included in the District newsletter and online. Sophomores toured the Wright Tech. Registration presentations are being given to students. Late Start: Teachers will discuss their personal Q-Comp goals, note taking strategies for students and how best to serve gifted and accelerated students in the general classroom. Paras will receive Executive Functioning information. Snocoming is February 12-16, the Bloodmobile is February 21 and 1-Act Play is January 25 at 6 p.m. F. Community Education – Grube reported that the month of preschool registration begins February 1 with an open house on February 8 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. Interviews for the recreation facilities coordinator position will begin in the next few weeks. 12. Committee Reports A. Finance and Programs Committee – Set a meeting date B. Support Staff Committee – The District and Union have a tentative agreement in the collective bargaining process that will go to February board meeting for approval. 13. Set Meeting Dates A.
