by Brenda Erdahl Sports Editor The Monticello hockey team had a tough start to its week with a 3-0 loss to Buffalo on Thursday, Jan. 4, but fared better a few days later, on Saturday, Jan. 6, when the Moose defeated Princeton 3-2. The Moose hosted the Bison at the Moose Sherritt Ice Arena in Monticello, Thursday. Buffalo got off to a strong start in the first period with a goal by Jake Braccini, assisted by Joe McNamara. The Bison scored again at 12 minutes of the second period, and near the end of the third period for the win. The Moose had 18 shots on their opponent’s goal. Meanwhile, Tyler Klatt, goalie for the Moose, stopped 18 of 21 shots on goal. On Saturday, Monticello traveled to Princeton to take on the Tigers. Princeton started scoring with an even strength goal by Markus Abrahamson early in the first period. The Moose responded in the second period with a strong effort by Maple Lake players Jeffrey Henrikson and Devon Lyons. Henrikson scored the goal with Lyons assisting. Matt Miller gave the Moose a 2-1 lead with his goal at 8:21 of the second period, assisted by Jacob Sorenson. Princeton’s Tyler Danielson put the puck past Monticello’s goalie on a powerplay at 11:05 of the third period to knot the score. Three minutes later, Lyons scored on a power play for the game winning goal. Troy Dahlheimer and Jack Saunders got the assists. Klatt saved 19 of 21 shots on goal for the Moose. Monticello will travel to Chisago Lakes Arena on Thursday, Jan. 11, to face North Branch at 7 p.m. On Tuesday, Jan. 16, the Moose will go to Mora for a 7:30 p.m. game.
