The Monticello/Maple Lake boys hockey team claimed the top seed going into the Section 5A tournament this week.
The Moose boast a record of 16-7-2 and will face either Becker ( No. 9 seed) or Pequot Lakes (No. 8 seed) on Thursday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m. at the Moose Sherritt Arena in Monticello.
The Moose finished up the regular season last week with losses to non-conference and non-section foes Sartell and St. Cloud Cathedral.
On Tuesday, Feb. 13, Monticello traveled to St. Cloud to take on Sartell and fell 2-1 to the Sabres.
Sartell started scoring in the second period. The Moose answered with a power play goal by Maple Lake sophomore Jeffrey Henrikson, assisted by Jack Saunders and Troy Dahlheimer.
Sartell snuck in a final, game-winning goal at 14:26 of the third period for the win. The Moose’s Tyler Klatt saved 42 of 44 shots on goal.
On Thursday, Feb. 15, the Moose hosted St. Cloud Cathedral and fell 7-2.
After a scoreless first period, Cathedral’s Jon Bell put the first points on the board. Monticello’s Troy Dahlheimer answered with an unassisted goal to tie the score 1-1.
Cathedral then scored six goals in a row; three in the second and three in the third.The Moose’s Jake Friede scored Monticello’s second goal of the evening at 16:26 of the third with help from Tyler Anderson.
Moose goalie Collin Soderholm saved nine of 10 shots on goal and Klatt saved 19 of 25 shots on goal.
If the Moose win on Thursday, they will play again on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. at the home of the high seed. The championship game is scheduled for Thursday, March 1, at 7 p.m. at the Elk River Ice Arena.
